In the heart of the Val di Chiana, among rolling hills and villages steeped in history, Torrita di Siena hosts one of Tuscany's most original and heartfelt events: the Palio dei Somari. More than just a folkloric event, it is a moment when the community comes together around its roots, transforming the town into a stage of colors, emotions, and ancient traditions.
The Palio di Torrita features donkeys: humble animals, symbols of farm work and daily toil, which become the focal point of a festival that celebrates—with irony and respect—the rural identity of the area. The Palio was created in 1966 to pay homage to the agricultural world and its tireless working companions. Over time, the event has grown to become a magnet for enthusiasts, tourists, and curious visitors from all over Italy.
In keeping with the best Tuscan traditions, Torrita is divided into eight districts: Cavone, Le Fonti, Le Stazione, Porta Gavina, Porta a Pago, Porta Nova, Refenero, and Selva. During the days of the Palio, flags and colors appear on windows and balconies, while drums and trumpets enliven the streets of the village. Each district prepares for months: strategies are studied, jockeys are trained, and participation in the rich program of events preceding the race is organized.
The event is not limited to the final race: it is a veritable festival of traditions. Among the most eagerly awaited events are:
The climax of the Palio comes with the donkey race, held in the historic Piazza Matteotti: four heats, one final, and only one winner. The jockeys ride bareback and the audience holds its breath as the unpredictable and stubborn animals become the protagonists of an exciting and often daring competition. The winner wins the drappellone dell'anno, a work of art created by different painters each year, which becomes the pride and joy of the district.
The Palio dei Somari is not just an event to watch: it is an experience to be enjoyed. Those who arrive in Torrita during the Palio are overwhelmed by an authentic atmosphere, where history meets celebration and the community enthusiastically welcomes anyone who wants to be part of it. For those visiting Tuscany in spring, the Palio dei Somari is an unmissable event: original, entertaining, rooted in the territory, and capable of conveying the genuine soul of Tuscan culture with simplicity.
