Torrita di Siena

An authentic medieval village in the heart of Tuscany

Nestled among the gentle hills of the Val di Chiana, Torrita di Siena has preserved the timeless charm of centuries past. Its origins date back to the Lombard era, but it was between the 13th and 15th centuries that the village flourished as a fortified outpost of the Republic of Siena. Even today, the ancient walls enclose a compact and harmonious historic center, with cobblestone lanes and evocative views.

Passing through one of the four medieval gates (Porta Gavina, Porta a Sole, Porta Nova, and Porta a Pago), you step into an atmosphere suspended in time. At the heart of the village lies Piazza Matteotti, dominated by the elegant Town Hall (formerly the Palazzo Pretorio), a refined symbol of Torrita’s civic history. Just a few steps away stands the charming 19th-century Teatro degli Oscuri, still vibrant today with performances and concerts.

Not far away rises the Collegiate Church of Saints Martino and Costanzo, blending Romanesque and Baroque elements and housing artworks tied to the town’s spiritual heritage. As you wander the narrow streets, you’ll encounter other historic churches, such as Santa Flora e Lucilla (home to a precious artwork by Donatello), Santa Croce, and San Michele Arcangelo, intimate treasures of popular devotion preserving frescoes and finely crafted altars.

Just outside the walls stands the evocative Church of Madonna delle Nevi, built in the 15th century and later enriched with Renaissance and Baroque details: a serene and contemplative sanctuary.

Torrita di Siena is a living village, animated by events that celebrate history, music, and community. For the feast of Saint Joseph in March, the streets come alive with the famous Palio dei Somari, a traditional donkey race where the town’s districts compete amid historical costumes, parades, and music. At the end of June, the renowned Torrita Blues Festival transforms Piazza Matteotti into a magical open-air stage under the stars, welcoming world-class artists and attracting blues enthusiasts from across the globe.

Throughout the year, cultural festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and food & wine events reveal the authentic spirit of Tuscany through its flavors, art, and conviviality. Experiencing Torrita di Siena means embracing the slow rhythm of its past and discovering a genuine, welcoming Tuscany, where history meets everyday beauty, and every corner invites you to pause, observe, and breathe in the magic of the place.
