From 11 to 13 September 2026, Torrita di Siena will once again immerse itself in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages with “Ghino di Tacco Days”, the event dedicated to one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in the history of the area.
For three days, the village will become the setting for a journey through history, legend, culture and local traditions, all inspired by the famous medieval outlaw whose story is closely linked to Torrita di Siena and the Val d’Orcia.
Ghino di Tacco was born around the middle of the 13th century at La Fratta Castle, in what is now the municipality of Torrita di Siena.
A rebellious nobleman with an adventurous life, he became known for raids, acts of revenge and clashes with the Republic of Siena, eventually taking control of the Fortress of Radicofani, the place that would become most closely associated with his legend.
Ghino’s fame soon spread beyond Tuscany and entered the pages of Italian literary history. Dante Alighieri mentions him in Canto VI of Purgatorio, while Giovanni Boccaccio devoted one of the stories in the Decameron to him, helping to shape the image of the “gentleman bandit” that is still associated with his name today.
The 2026 Ghino di Tacco Days, taking place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, celebrate this historic and cultural connection, turning Torrita into a meeting place for historical re-enactment, entertainment, local culture and food and wine traditions.
The historic centre and Piazza Matteotti provide the natural setting for the event, giving visitors the opportunity to discover Torrita through its ancient walls, squares, narrow streets and historic buildings.
The festival is also linked to the Ghino di Tacco Trail, a route that symbolically connects Torrita di Siena with Radicofani, passing through some of the most beautiful villages and landscapes of southern Tuscany.
The project aims to promote the area not only from a historical perspective, but also for its tourism, landscape and cultural heritage.
The trail follows the places associated with the life and adventures of the legendary bandit, linking Torrita di Siena, Monticchiello, Contignano and Radicofani.
It creates a connection between the Valdichiana and the Val d’Orcia and offers a different way to experience these landscapes: not simply as rolling hills, historic villages and country roads, but as places shaped by centuries of history and stories that have become part of local tradition.
This connection between Ghino di Tacco and the surrounding area is one of the most interesting aspects of the event. The festival is not only a historical re-enactment, but also an invitation to discover and explore the Tuscan countryside around Torrita.
September is also one of the most enjoyable times of year to visit this part of Tuscany.
The Ghino di Tacco Days are the perfect opportunity to spend an entire weekend in Torrita di Siena and use the village as a base for exploring Montepulciano, Pienza, Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d’Orcia and the Val d’Orcia.
Staying in the historic centre, however, also allows visitors to experience the festival from a particularly privileged position.
Dimora del Campanile, next to the Collegiate Church of Saints Martino and Costanzo and just a few steps from Piazza Matteotti, is located right in the heart of the village: simply step outside and you will find yourself among the ancient walls and the streets hosting the main events.
From 11 to 13 September 2026, Torrita di Siena therefore offers yet another reason to stay for a few days: to follow in the footsteps of Ghino di Tacco, discover his legend and experience one of Tuscany’s most authentic historic villages at a time when its past once again takes centre stage.
