Located between the Valdichiana and the Val d’Orcia, Torrita di Siena enjoys a particularly convenient position for visitors wishing to discover some of the most fascinating landscapes, villages and art cities in central Italy.
Choosing Torrita as a base for your stay means being able to reach Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona and the villages of the Val d’Orcia in a short time, while also planning day trips to Siena, Arezzo, Lake Trasimeno and Assisi.
A stay of several days allows you to travel at a relaxed pace, devoting each day to a different itinerary and returning in the evening to the peaceful atmosphere of Torrita di Siena’s historic centre.
Montepulciano – 15 km
Just a few minutes from Torrita lies Montepulciano, one of Tuscany’s best-known hill towns. Its historic centre unfolds along an uphill street leading to Piazza Grande, surrounded by Renaissance palaces, the Cathedral and the Town Hall.
Montepulciano is also the home of Vino Nobile. Visiting the historic wine cellars carved beneath the ancient palaces offers the opportunity to discover one of Tuscany’s most important winemaking traditions. Just outside the town centre, the Temple of San Biagio is also well worth a visit, surrounded by the beautiful rolling countryside.
Pienza – 15 km
Pienza is an essential destination for anyone staying in this part of Tuscany. Known as the Renaissance “ideal city”, it has a compact and elegant historic centre arranged around Piazza Pio II.
From its panoramic terrace and the streets overlooking the Val d’Orcia, visitors can admire some of the most celebrated views of the Tuscan countryside. The visit can be completed with a stop at the local shops specialising in Pecorino di Pienza cheese and other traditional products from the area.
Monticchiello – 20 km
Small, peaceful and still deeply connected to its identity, Monticchiello is one of the most authentic villages in the Val d’Orcia.
Enclosed within medieval walls and overlooking a landscape of rolling hills, cypress trees and unpaved country roads, it is the perfect place for a leisurely walk away from the busiest tourist routes. The village is also known for its Teatro Povero, a unique cultural experience in which local residents become the writers and performers of stories inspired by their own community.
Chianciano Terme – 24 km
Chianciano Terme is the ideal destination for a day dedicated to wellness and relaxation. The town is known for its thermal waters, parks and spa centres devoted to health and well-being.
Alongside the modern spa district lies the historic village of Chianciano, with its narrow streets, small squares and panoramic views across the Valdichiana. It is an excellent destination for those wishing to combine cultural visits with a few hours of rest and relaxation.
The Val d’Orcia – from 25 km
The Val d’Orcia is not simply a destination, but a landscape to be explored slowly. Gently rolling hills, isolated farmhouses, rows of cypress trees, vineyards, olive groves and panoramic roads create one of Tuscany’s most recognisable landscapes.
Starting from Torrita di Siena, visitors can plan a variety of itineraries, stopping in small villages, at scenic viewpoints and on local farms. Each season offers different colours: the fresh green of spring, the golden shades of summer and the warm tones of autumn.
San Quirico d’Orcia – 28 km
San Quirico d’Orcia is an elegant and intimate village situated along the ancient route of the Via Francigena.
A walk through its historic centre reveals the Collegiate Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, Palazzo Chigi, paved streets and the Horti Leonini, a refined Italian Renaissance garden. The surrounding countryside features some of the most photographed landscapes in the Val d’Orcia, with rolling hills, cypress trees and historic farmhouses.
Bagno Vignoni – 30 km
Bagno Vignoni is a truly unique place. At the heart of the village, instead of a traditional square, there is a large pool filled with natural thermal water.
The presence of the water, the ancient stone buildings and the small restaurants and cafés surrounding the square creates a particularly evocative atmosphere. Just below the village, visitors can explore the Parco dei Mulini, where the thermal water was once used to power ancient mills.
Cortona – 30 km
Perched on a hill overlooking the Valdichiana, Cortona preserves medieval streets, historic palaces and lively squares.
A visit can begin in Piazza della Repubblica and continue towards Piazza Signorelli, the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the Diocesan Museum. Climbing towards the upper part of the town leads to panoramic viewpoints offering sweeping views across the countryside and towards Lake Trasimeno.
Lake Trasimeno – 35 km
Lake Trasimeno offers a landscape quite different from the rolling Tuscan hills and makes for an enjoyable excursion combining nature, small villages and outdoor activities.
Visitors can walk along the lakeside, explore towns such as Passignano or Tuoro, take a boat trip to the islands or simply stop to watch the sunset over the water. The area is also ideal for cycling, water sports and discovering traditional dishes inspired by the lake and its fishing heritage.
Montalcino – 40 km
Montalcino overlooks a landscape of vineyards, woodland and rolling hills. The village is famous throughout the world for Brunello wine, but it also offers a historic centre rich in picturesque views and architectural heritage.
The fortress provides a wide panorama across the surrounding countryside. A day in Montalcino can include a visit to the village, a wine tasting at one of the local wineries and a stop at the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, set within a remarkably peaceful landscape.
Arezzo – 50 km
Arezzo is an art city that is often less crowded than Tuscany’s most famous destinations, yet it preserves an important historical and artistic heritage.
Piazza Grande, with its distinctive sloping pavement, is the heart of the city. From here, visitors can reach the Basilica of San Francesco, the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and the streets of the historic centre, lined with palaces, traditional workshops and antique shops.
Siena – 55 km
Siena deserves at least a full day. Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia together create one of Italy’s most celebrated urban spaces.
The visit can continue towards the Cathedral, with its marble façade and monumental complex, before wandering through the streets of the city’s historic contrade, or districts. Staying in Siena until late afternoon allows visitors to enjoy its special atmosphere as the pace of the day begins to slow.
Assisi – 85 km
For a longer excursion, visitors can travel to Assisi, the Umbrian city associated with Saint Francis and a destination attracting travellers from all over the world.
The Basilica of Saint Francis, the stone streets, the Basilica of Saint Clare and the many panoramic viewpoints reveal a city where art, spirituality and landscape come together. By leaving Torrita di Siena in the morning, it is possible to spend a full day in Assisi and return in the evening.
One Stay, Many Different Itineraries
Torrita di Siena’s location makes it possible to plan your holiday according to your interests: the villages and landscapes of the Val d’Orcia, historic art cities, wineries and local products, thermal spas, nature walks or days spent along the shores of Lake Trasimeno.
In just a few days, you can enjoy a different itinerary every day: a day between Montepulciano and Pienza, a journey along the roads of the Val d’Orcia, a visit to Cortona and Lake Trasimeno, or a longer excursion to Siena, Arezzo or Assisi.
